October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month—a time to raise awareness and share information about breast cancer care, recovery and available support.
If you're preparing for breast surgery or adjusting to changes afterward, you may have questions about recovery, breast forms, specialized clothing and fitting options.
This guide introduces some of the practical resources available and explains how Okotoks HC Pharmacy can help you explore your options.
You're welcome to ask us about products and fitting services whether or not you fill prescriptions with us. No purchase is required.
💗 Preparing for Breast Surgery
Every breast cancer surgery and recovery is different.
Depending on your procedure, recovery may involve tenderness, swelling, changes in sensation, temporary difficulty moving the arm or shoulder, surgical drains, and adapting to changes in the breast or chest. Your surgical team should provide instructions specific to your procedure and recovery.
Before surgery, it can be helpful to ask not only about the procedure itself, but also about everyday life afterward.
Questions worth asking may include:
- Will I go home with surgical drains?
- What clothing will be easiest to put on?
- When can I shower?
- When can I begin wearing a bra?
- When should I begin arm and shoulder exercises?
- What swelling should I expect?
- Who should I contact if something doesn't seem right?
- Could physiotherapy or rehabilitation be helpful?
- Am I at increased risk for lymphedema?
You don't need to purchase specialized products in advance unless they have been recommended for your recovery.
Our guide to comfort and recovery after mastectomy surgery explores these practical questions in much greater detail.
🌸 The First Weeks Are About Healing
Immediately after surgery is generally not the time to worry about finding a permanent breast form or recreating a particular silhouette.
Healing comes first.
Soft, front-opening or post-surgical garments can make dressing easier when shoulder movement is temporarily limited. Depending on your surgery and healthcare team's recommendations, specialized post-surgical garments may also have a role.
Our After Mastectomy Surgery Needs collection includes post-surgical bras and specialized garments for different stages and needs.
But these products aren't automatically appropriate after every breast procedure. A compression garment, for example, shouldn't be chosen simply because swelling exists. The cause of the swelling and appropriate management need to be understood first.
Your surgical or healthcare team should guide decisions involving postoperative wounds, drains, unexplained swelling or medical compression.
💧 Swelling, Movement & Lymphatic Care
After breast cancer surgery, the arm and shoulder can become stiff or sore and range of motion may be affected. Rehabilitation exercises and physiotherapy may help with mobility, stiffness and pain, but the appropriate exercises and timing depend on your procedure and recovery.
Lymphedema is different from the temporary swelling that can occur shortly after surgery. It happens when lymph fluid doesn't flow normally and accumulates in tissues, and the risk can persist after treatment involving lymph nodes.
New or persistent swelling, puffiness or heaviness affecting the arm, hand, breast or chest should be discussed with your healthcare team. Redness, warmth, increasing pain or fever may indicate an infection or another complication and should be assessed promptly.
Specialized garments and products exist for lymphatic and postoperative care, including options such as Amoena LymphFlow garments. But the right product depends on what is causing the symptoms and what your healthcare team recommends.
If you're experiencing persistent swelling, stiffness or discomfort, ask your healthcare team whether rehabilitation, specialized garments or other supportive measures may be appropriate.
Our team can explain available garments and fitting options, while medical assessment and treatment recommendations should come from your healthcare professionals.
🎀 Breast Forms Are an Option—Not an Obligation
After mastectomy, you may choose to wear a breast prosthesis (breast form), consider reconstruction, or remain without either option.
A breast form is not medically required, and the decision depends on your comfort, lifestyle, health and personal preferences.
If you choose to wear a breast form, several options are available:
- Soft temporary forms
- Full breast forms
- Partial forms or shapers
- Lightweight silicone forms
- Contact or adhesive forms
- Forms worn inside a pocketed bra
- Forms designed specifically for swimming
Our Mastectomy Breast Forms & Prostheses collection includes different styles because different bodies, surgeries, preferences and lifestyles require different solutions.
The most suitable breast form depends on your individual fit and preferences.
💗 Why Breast Form Fitting Matters
Choosing a breast form involves more than selecting a size or style. Your type of surgery, chest-wall contour, remaining breast tissue, body shape and personal preferences all influence the fit.
Permanent breast form fitting generally takes place once the surgical area has healed and swelling has settled. The appropriate timing depends on your recovery and your healthcare team's guidance.
During a fitting, we consider comfort, weight, shape, symmetry and lifestyle. You may prefer a lightweight form, a particular shape under clothing, an adhesive option or a form designed for swimming.
The goal is to find an option that suits your needs and preferences, if you choose to wear a breast form at all.
👙 Bras, Camisoles, Swimwear & Everyday Life
Mastectomy clothing has come a long way from purely medical-looking garments.
Pocketed bras are available in different fabrics, colours and styles, while camisoles provide additional options. Mastectomy bras typically include pockets designed to hold a breast form securely.
There are also specialized swim forms and pocketed mastectomy swimsuits for returning to swimming, vacations, aqua fitness or simply enjoying an afternoon at the pool.
Our Mastectomy Clothing & Bras collection includes bras, camisoles, swimwear and other options for different stages of life after breast surgery.
The available styles allow you to choose clothing based on comfort, fit and personal preference.
💗 From Our Fitting Experience
Breast form and garment fittings are individual. Similar surgical procedures can result in different fitting needs, depending on chest shape, remaining breast tissue, comfort and personal preferences.
Some people prefer a lightweight breast form, while others prioritize symmetry, specific clothing styles or a particular level of support. Choosing not to wear a breast form is also an option.
During a fitting, we discuss these preferences, explain the available products and help identify suitable options.
Our role is to provide practical product guidance and fitting assistance, while referring medical concerns to your healthcare team.
❓ Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to buy a breast form before my surgery?
Usually there is no reason to rush into purchasing a permanent breast prosthesis before surgery. Your chest needs time to heal and postoperative swelling needs time to settle before permanent fitting. Soft temporary forms are available for earlier stages when appropriate.
Do I have to wear a breast prosthesis after a mastectomy?
No. A breast prosthesis is optional. Reconstruction and remaining flat are also possibilities. What feels right is a personal decision.
What is a temporary breast form?
A temporary breast form, sometimes called a puff, is a lightweight, soft form that can provide shape while the surgical area is healing.
Can I swim with a breast form?
Yes. Breast forms designed specifically for swimming are available, and pocketed mastectomy swimwear can help hold a swim form securely in the water.
What if I develop swelling after breast surgery?
Some temporary swelling can occur following surgery, but persistent or new swelling—particularly involving the arm, hand, breast or chest—should be brought to your healthcare team's attention. Lymphedema and other causes of swelling should be properly assessed rather than self-diagnosed.
Do I need an appointment just to ask a question?
No.
